Dr. Benjamin Matthews

Passion
Dr. Matthews transitioned from a successful career in finance to pursue his passion for serving others in the healthcare field. He immediately fell in love with dentistry’s unique blend of artistry and hands-on care, finding joy in creating beautiful smiles. Committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment, Dr. Matthews has built a practice dedicated to delivering exceptional care and comfort to every patient who walks through the door.
Education
Dr. Matthews earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine. With a passion for continuous learning, he actively pursues advanced education to stay at the forefront of modern dentistry. Dr. Matthews has completed numerous Continuing Education courses, further refining his expertise in Endodontics, Implant Dentistry, Full Mouth Reconstruction, Invisalign, and Airway Management. His dedication to growth and innovation ensures he delivers the highest level of care to his patients.

Charity
Dr. Matthews loves to serve others. He participates in refugee clinics, Missions of Mercy, and Give Kids a Smile programs to bring dental care to those in need.
Home Life
Dr. Matthews’ journey has taken him across the U.S., from California to South Carolina, but he’s delighted to call Blacksburg, VA, home. He cherishes family time and enjoys exploring the outdoors with his wife, Melanie, and their son, Rivers. Together, they share a love for adventure—backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and downhill skiing.
An avid cyclist, Dr. Matthews embraces an active lifestyle and can often be found riding his bike. For him, a crisp autumn afternoon spent cycling Virginia’s winding roads is the recipe for a perfect day.Dr. Matthews also nurtures his childhood passion for woodworking and loves working on home improvement projects or crafting unique pieces alongside his son. In addition, he’s an enthusiastic reader, constantly immersed in a new book—whether it’s a biography on George Washington, a self-improvement guide, or an engaging work of fiction, he’s always eager to learn and grow.
Dr. Gavin Chen
“I enjoy having the opportunity to learn about my patients needs so that we can work collaboratively to help them reach their oral health goals. I want them to feel like they received compassionate, high quality care and that they were being treated like they were a family member.”
Passion
Dr. Chen discovered his calling in dentistry through a powerful blend of science, art, and genuine patient connection. After a battle with pediatric lymphoma, he has learned firsthand the difference compassion can make in the medical industry, in addition to evidence-based care. Guided by this perspective, Dr. Chen takes the time to listen and build trust with his patients. For him, dentistry is a collaborative journey, and he strives to ensure every patient leaves feeling heard, valued, and educated about their oral health.
Education
Dr. Chen graduated with honors from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he was inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon national honor society and received the Dr. Roy O. Greep Basic Science Award for academic excellence. Following dental school, Dr. Chen completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency at the Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center in Abingdon, Virginia, serving the Southwest Virginia community.
He continues to advance his skills through rigorous continuing education, including focused training in endodontics and guided implant surgery at programs such as the University of Michigan Endodontology Annual Board Review and Alabama Implant Education. Dr. Chen’s commitment to lifelong learning ensures that his patients always receive the most modern, evidence-based treatments available.

Charity
Dr. Chen has served with Give Kids a Smile, Give Veterans a Smile, and Mini Missions of Mercy, providing vital dental care to underserved communities. He has also participated in medical and dental outreach trips to Valladolid, Mexico, with his father.

Home Life
Originally from Carson City, Nevada, Dr. Chen’s road to Blacksburg winds through Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. He and his fiancée, Paige, are excited to share new adventures in Blacksburg with their pet bunny, Tuesday.
Dr. Chen is passionate about staying active: he enjoys weightlifting, alpine skiing, and exploring Virginia’s scenic roads on his bike. When he’s not outdoors, you might find him playing guitar, discovering local restaurants, or simply spending quality time with loved ones.
